HISTORY/

Rich in Heritage

This scene of the dam behind Indian Orchard Mills, is reminiscent of a much simpler time in history.

Even though this structure still exists over 100 years later, times are much different now than they were back then.

The water from the Chicopee River was diverted through the canal, the same way it is today. Back then, however it was sent crashing through large diameter tubes, (penstocks), and past turbines which, as they turned, sent power to the machinery throughout the mill complex. It was an intricate system of leather belts traveling through towers, transferring water power to machines. It was dangerous work maintaining this system, and an inefficient source of energy by today's standards. Indian Orchard Mills converted to electric power around 1916 which rendered the water powered system obsolete. Today however, the local utilities continue to use the canal and dam to manufacture electricity at the west end of the complex.

Main St. Turn of the Century

Turn of the century Main Street. What a fabulous place to shop, dine or see a movie reel at The Grand Theater. Dress shops, shoe makers, hardware stores and restaurants all easily accessible by foot, carriage, or a trolley which ran the full length of the street.

This is a time when Indian Orchard Mills was the primary employer in the Orchard. In fact, the Mills were responsible for much of the infrastructure at the time, generously donating land for schools, libraries and parks.
